What Happens When You’re Featured

So, in the clubs over at Wattpad, I’ve seen plenty of topics asking how to get featured, but none about what might happen after you get featured. So I’m gonna tell you!

First off, this is only my experience.  Yours may be different.  But I feel like being told what I experienced will help you understand why being featured is such a huge deal

I was featured on February 4th, which was a Thursday. It looks like for every genre they select two stories to be featured together. You’re in the mix with 7 other stories at the top for the month you’re featured.

I have tried to keep track of my stats so I can see how I’m doing on a day to day basis. So, the night before my feature, I had around 2800 reads, which is pretty good.  At least I think anyway.  On Friday when I checked, I had 5200 reads!  Yup, I had over 2000 reads in 24 hours!!!

I’ll be back tomorrow to tell you how the rest of the weekend went!

It Happened!!!

I’ve been gone for awhile, but for good reason.  My story, Broken Crown, is going to be featured on Wattpad!

Please excuse me while I scream over here in the corner!!!!

I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am, how scared I am, how speechless I am.

It’s all going down Thursday, February 4th and I will definitely be back to let you know how everything goes once it’s up there.

Editing Sucks

I’m currently editing Broken Crown. Again. Yeah me (that was completely sarcastic by the way).  So why am I editing?  Because when I go back and read it, I find things that I could have made better. Things I needed to word differently.
Why am I telling you this?  Because I feel like a lot of the time, new writers get frustrated because they think some authors just write and it looks great the first go round. That’s not what happens. There’s multiple drafts, multiple head aches, multiple characters and scenes that are deleted.
So don’t give up. Keep writing. And know that I’m at home, doing the same thing!

The Dreaded Rewriting Process

I’ve had a few people comment that they really like my story and my writing style.

First of all, I’m blown away by those comments. Really I am.

Second, I want to assure you that the version you find on Wattpad is not the first one I wrote.  The version I have on there is actually the fourth draft. Which means there were three drafts before it that I cried and cursed over for months.

My first draft was terrible. Like truly horrible. It came in at 30000 words and was not actually a story at all. It was nothing but various scenes, with absolutely nothing connecting them. NOTHING! I literally put “Put Something Here” in sections. And if I couldn’t think of a name for a character, I put “Name” in big letters.

Do you know why I did that? Because your first draft is supposed to be terrible.

(This is a picture of all of my notes and versions before I finally finished. And I’m still not finished. )

When I finally had somewhat of a story, I started re writing it. The second draft was where I had actual chapters, an actual beginning, middle and end. But it still sucked.

(All those red marks. All those mistakes.)

So I went to a third draft. And it was better. Much better. Good enough that u let people actually read it, which was the scariest thing I have ever done in my life, but I’ll tell you more about that in a later post.

The version that is on Wattpad now is the one that was fixed with the feedback I got from my beta readers.

I tell you all this because I don’t want you to get discouraged with writing. It’s a lonely activity, one that bleeds you dry. You’ll get headaches and self doubt. But if you keep doing it, keep working at it, you’ll get to the end. And if your like me, you’ll probably cry. Yup, I did. And I’m not ashamed one bit!

I’m Ranked!

Wattpad has this amazing thing where if your book is in the top 1000 for it’s genre, it will tell you what number you are.

And guess what?

I’m #661 in Fantasy!!!!

Excuse me while I go over here and scream while jumping up and down!  Seriously, that is so incredibly awesome to me that my book has had enough reads, votes and comments to be on a list.

If you have been reading the story, and you saw the post I uploaded yesterday, than you know where I left off.  I would love to know what you think?  Did I take you by surprise?

Let me know lovelies!

Your Input

I know I have a few readers out there, so I’m wondering if y’all would like me to talk about the process I use while writing.  Like, how I managed to type out the first draft and how I finally got it polished enough to show people.  If you would like to read something like that, or anything else that comes to mind, let me know!  I would absolutely love to hear from you!

Happy Thanksgiving

Today in the states it’s Thanksgiving Day.  And while some will be out shopping before the turkey is even carved, I will be with my family.  Whatever you may be doing to celebrate and wherever you may be in the world, I want to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.
