The Sequel

So I’ve been writing the sequel to Broken Crown for the last few weeks.  Ok, months. I’ve been working on it for months.  I thought it would be easier.  Note I didn’t say easy, I said easier. I know writing is difficult. You’ll critique your own work, hate and love it all at the same time.  You’ll think your characters are stupid, and then go back to how awesome they really are.  Sequels are no different.

I’m doing a sort of experiment with Wattpad at the moment. I’m literaly uploading the first draft.  Which means that in a few weeks, those first few chapters will change dramatically.  They already have, I just haven’t uploaded them.

Why am I doing this?  Well, partly so I can see how much it changes and the reactions from the readers, and partly so those that are reading my stories on there realize that the first draft of anything is normally terrible.  Ok, so maybe not terrible.  But it definetly changes the more you wrte and revise.

It also helps keep me in check.  I upload once a week, which means I have to have a chapter ready.  So I have to write every single week.  Not every day, because lets be real, I have other obligations, like laundry and food.  But, if I can carve out enough time every week to put some words down, I’m that much closer to finishing the first draft.

Do y’all have a way that helps you complete your novel?  Like I said, this is my second one, so I know I can do it.  But that one took 18 months, and I would really like it if I can complete this one before 2018!!

Alright, I need to go.  I need to write.  And eat.  Probably not in that order!

I’m BACK!!

So, I disappeared for a little while.  But I promise you I was actually busy!  So let me catch you up on what’s been going on in my little world.

First, BROKEN CROWN REACHED #1!!!!  Yes, you read that right.  For one entire day, Broken Crown was #1 in Fantasy.  I’ll take it!  With that came reads, which was awesome, and some new followers, who are also awesome!

Second, I’ve been working on the sequel to Broken Crown.  It’s proven to be a bit more difficult than I imagined.  I figured since I already had a cast of characters and a plotline drawn out, pulling it all together would be easy.  I was wrong.  It’s harder this time because I’m introducing new characters, have new drama with in all of them, and I’m still trying to reach that end goal.  It’s going, but some days are painful!!

Third, I’ve been working on some new stories.  I don’t know if I will put them on Wattpad, or if I will try and do something else with them.  We shall see.

And lastly, I’ve got something up my sleeve as far as Broken Crown and Levens saga goes, so stay tuned for some exciting news!!

Ok folks.  That’s all from me today!  I will be back with some new posts in the next few days.  Hopefully, you’re still interested!!

The Dreaded Rewriting Process

I’ve had a few people comment that they really like my story and my writing style.

First of all, I’m blown away by those comments. Really I am.

Second, I want to assure you that the version you find on Wattpad is not the first one I wrote.  The version I have on there is actually the fourth draft. Which means there were three drafts before it that I cried and cursed over for months.

My first draft was terrible. Like truly horrible. It came in at 30000 words and was not actually a story at all. It was nothing but various scenes, with absolutely nothing connecting them. NOTHING! I literally put “Put Something Here” in sections. And if I couldn’t think of a name for a character, I put “Name” in big letters.

Do you know why I did that? Because your first draft is supposed to be terrible.

(This is a picture of all of my notes and versions before I finally finished. And I’m still not finished. )

When I finally had somewhat of a story, I started re writing it. The second draft was where I had actual chapters, an actual beginning, middle and end. But it still sucked.

(All those red marks. All those mistakes.)

So I went to a third draft. And it was better. Much better. Good enough that u let people actually read it, which was the scariest thing I have ever done in my life, but I’ll tell you more about that in a later post.

The version that is on Wattpad now is the one that was fixed with the feedback I got from my beta readers.

I tell you all this because I don’t want you to get discouraged with writing. It’s a lonely activity, one that bleeds you dry. You’ll get headaches and self doubt. But if you keep doing it, keep working at it, you’ll get to the end. And if your like me, you’ll probably cry. Yup, I did. And I’m not ashamed one bit!
